A movie about Snoop Dogg's life is coming soon. According to a statement released by Universal Pictures on Wednesday, it is making a "definitive biopic" of the 51-year-old "entertainment industry mogul and icon of gangsta rap."

About the upcoming biopic of Snoop Dogg's life

The upcoming movie will feature music from Snoop Dogg's 30-year career, during which he has been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards and frequently worked with Dr. Dre, another legendary Los Angeles rap artist. Dr. Dre first featured Snoop on his solo album The Chronic and again on his solo single "Deep Cover" in 1992. According to reports, Allen Hughes (Dear Mama, HBO's The Defiant Ones) will direct the movie, and Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Ryan Coogler, will write the screenplay. He also stated, "It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni."

Additional details

The film will also mark the debut of Snoop's own production business, Death Row Pictures, born from the record label he acquired in February, Death Row Records. In addition, when they met some time after Snoop purchased Death Row Records, Universal chairman Donna Langley said in a statement on Wednesday that she "had the opportunity to hear [Snoop's] story in his own words." Langley continued, "We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist." Meanwhile, director Hughes said, there is "just something about his energy that brings people of all walks of life together." Moreover, LaKeith Stanfield's portrayal of Snoop Dogg in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton, which was about the influential rap group N.W.A, was another film produced by Universal Pictures. In that movie, Dr. Dre was costarred by Corey Hawkins (In The Heights). Snoop revealed to Yahoo! in May 2021 that he was working on a biography he called "the 'Snoop Dogg anthology,' the life story of Snoop Dogg," though he did not at the time necessarily envision it as a film. Snoop explained his goals at the time, saying, "[The project would follow] me being the 'Black Forest Gump,' so to speak, seeing me in all of these highlighted moments in American history."
